South Bend, Indiana, is the social and economic center of the area of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan known as Michiana. The University of Notre Dame and its neighbor, St. Mary's College, are the backbone of South Bend's economy, and pull in a diverse populace even thought the Catholic hierarch remains vigorously and ridiculously anti-gay.
Still, faculty and students make up a good portion of South Bend's gay population, and their visibility leads to a more diverse community. South Bend's gay nightlife is made up of tight knit friends and open-minded college students. Look for a lot more coming out of South Bend in the near future.
